02Description

Species Profile

**Yellow Marsh Saxifrage (Saxifraga hirculus)** The Yellow Marsh Saxifrage is a small perennial herb distinguished by its bright yellow, five-petaled flowers and narrow, lance-shaped leaves. Growing 10-30 cm tall, this Arctic-alpine plant produces solitary flowers on slender stems during summer months. The species plays a role in wetland ecosystems by providing nectar for pollinators and contributing to plant community diversity in harsh northern environments. This circumpolar species inhabits wet, calcareous soils in marshes, fens, and boggy areas across northern regions. Its range extends from Scandinavia and northern Britain through Russia and Central Asia to North America, including Alaska, Canada, and parts of the northern United States. The plant typically occurs at elevations from sea level to alpine zones, preferring areas with consistent moisture and mineral-rich substrates. The species faces significant threats from habitat loss due to drainage of wetlands for agriculture and development. Climate change poses additional challenges, as warming temperatures alter the hydrology of its specialized bog and fen habitats. In many regions, particularly in Central and Western Europe, populations have declined due to intensive land use and water table modifications. Conservation efforts include habitat protection through nature reserves and wetland restoration projects in several countries. Some populations receive monitoring through national biodiversity programs, and the species is legally protected in parts of its range, including the United Kingdom where it survives in only a few Scottish locations. The current outlook remains concerning, with the species classified as Endangered globally. While some northern populations appear stable, continued habitat pressures and climate change suggest ongoing vulnerability across much of its range.

Yellow Marsh Saxifrage is declining primarily due to habitat loss and degradation of wetland ecosystems through drainage, agricultural conversion, and development. Climate change poses an additional threat by altering the hydrology and temperature regimes of the specialized bog and fen habitats this species requires.
