Vardar Streber
Zingel balcanicus
Overview
Zingel balcanicus, the Vardar streber is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish in the family Percidae, the perches, ruffes, pikeperches and the darters. This species is endemic to the Vardar or Axios River in North Macedonia and its distribution may extend to the lower reaches of the river in Greece. Its biology is little known but other species in the genus Zingel require turbulent flows.
Zingel balcanicus faces severe threats from habitat degradation due to dam construction and water regulation in the Vardar River system. Pollution from agricultural runoff and urban development has significantly reduced water quality in its limited range. The species' extremely restricted distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to any localized environmental changes or catastrophic events.
Habitat
This endemic perch inhabits fast-flowing, well-oxygenated sections of the Vardar River and its tributaries in North Macedonia. It prefers rocky substrates and clear waters with moderate to strong currents, typically found at depths of 1-3 meters.
