Overview
The duinlantaarnspin (Agroeca lusatica) is a small ground-dwelling spider species with a pale brownish coloration and distinctive elongated body shape. This nocturnal hunter plays an important ecological role as both predator of small invertebrates and prey for larger arthropods and small vertebrates in its specialized habitat.
The duinlantaarnspin faces significant threats from habitat loss and degradation of its specialized coastal dune ecosystems. Urban development, recreational activities, and changes in natural dune dynamics have reduced the availability of suitable sandy habitats where this species can establish its characteristic ground-level webs.
Habitat
Inhabits coastal sand dunes and sandy grasslands, particularly in areas with sparse vegetation where it constructs ground-level webs among low-growing plants and in sandy substrates. The species shows a strong preference for stabilized dune systems with specific microhabitat conditions.
