Knipowitschia mrakovcici

UnknownCREUCREU

Overview

Knipowitschia mrakovcici is a species of freshwater goby Endemic to the Krka River catchment in Croatia where it is only found in lakes. Males of this species can reach a length of 3.2 centimetres (1.3 in) SL while females only reach 2.8 centimetres (1.1 in) SL. The specific name honours the Croatian biologist Milorad Mrakovčić of the University of Zagreb, who provided the author, Peter J. Miller, with the original type material.

Knipowitschia mrakovcici faces severe threats from habitat degradation in its extremely limited range within the Neretva River basin. Water pollution from agricultural runoff and urban development has significantly impacted water quality in the shallow, vegetated areas where this endemic goby resides. Infrastructure development and river regulation have altered natural flow patterns and destroyed critical spawning habitats. The species' tiny population size makes it exceptionally vulnerable to any environmental disturbance or pollution event.

Threat summary

Habitat

This endemic goby inhabits shallow, slow-flowing sections of the Neretva River system in Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly areas with dense aquatic vegetation and soft substrates. The species requires clean, well-oxygenated waters with specific temperature and flow conditions found only in limited stretches of its native river basin.
