Eleutherodactylus brevirostris
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Eleutherodactylus brevirostris faces severe threats from habitat destruction due to agricultural expansion and urban development across its limited range in Puerto Rico. The species' small population size and restricted distribution make it extremely vulnerable to environmental changes and natural disasters, including hurricanes that can devastate remaining forest fragments. Invasive species and disease outbreaks, particularly chytrid fungus infections that have decimated amphibian populations throughout the Caribbean, pose additional critical threats to this endemic frog's survival.
Habitat
This endemic Puerto Rican frog inhabits moist limestone forests and coffee plantations in the central mountainous regions of the island. It requires areas with dense leaf litter and adequate moisture levels for breeding and foraging, typically found at elevations between 300-800 meters.
