Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
The Sapphire Quail-dove faces severe pressure from deforestation and habitat fragmentation across its limited range in the Caribbean islands. Mining activities and agricultural expansion have destroyed significant portions of its montane forest habitat, while introduced predators like cats and rats threaten ground-nesting populations. Hurricane damage to remaining forest fragments poses an additional threat to this already vulnerable species.
Habitat
The Sapphire Quail-dove inhabits montane forests and dense woodland areas in the Caribbean, typically at elevations between 300-1,200 meters. It prefers undisturbed primary forest with dense understory vegetation where it forages on the ground for seeds, fruits, and invertebrates.
