Conservation Outlook

Outlook: Deteriorating

Colombia ranks among the world's most biodiverse countries, hosting ecosystems from the Amazon rainforest to Caribbean coral reefs, Andean páramos, and Pacific coastal forests. The country encompasses portions of two biodiversity hotspots: the Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena and Tropical Andes regions. However, IUCN Red List 2025 data reveals an alarming situation with all 64 assessed species classified as critically endangered, representing a 100% threat rate across mammals, birds, amphibians, insects, other invertebrates, and crustaceans.

Colombia's biodiversity faces severe pressure from deforestation driven by coca cultivation, cattle ranching, and palm oil expansion, particularly in the Amazon and Chocó regions. The ongoing internal conflict has historically limited conservation access to remote areas, while illegal mining contaminates watersheds in the Magdalena and Cauca river basins. Climate change threatens high-altitude páramo ecosystems and coral reefs in the Caribbean.

Post-peace agreement opportunities have emerged for conservation in previously inaccessible areas, though implementation remains challenging. The government has established ambitious protected area targets and participates in international conservation initiatives. However, the universal critical endangerment status of assessed species suggests conservation efforts are insufficient to address the scale of threats.

Immediate intervention is required to prevent widespread extinctions across Colombia's unique ecosystems.

Frequently asked questions

How many threatened species are in Colombia?
Colombia has 2,342 threatened species recorded on SpeciesRadar — 514 of those are Critically Endangered, facing an extremely high risk of extinction. The figures combine IUCN Red List data with national red list assessments where available.
How many Critically Endangered, Endangered, and Vulnerable species does Colombia have?
Of the 2,342 threatened species in Colombia, 514 are Critically Endangered, 860 are Endangered, and 968 are Vulnerable. Together these three IUCN Red List categories make up the "threatened" total.
What is the most endangered species in Colombia?
Among the 514 Critically Endangered species in Colombia, Santamartamys rufodorsalis is one of the most at-risk — featured prominently on the country dashboard. The full list of Critically Endangered species is filterable on the Species tab.
What protected areas exist in Colombia?
Colombia has 40 protected areas catalogued on SpeciesRadar, sourced from the WDPA and national designations. Notable sites include Cinturón Andino Biosphere Reserve, El Tuparro Biosphere Reserve, Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, and Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta Biosphere Reserve, among 36 others. The full list is sortable and downloadable on the Protected Areas tab.
Which animal and plant groups are most threatened in Colombia?
The most affected groups in Colombia, by number of threatened species, are plants (1,324), amphibians (336), and fishes (214). The full taxonomic breakdown is shown on the country dashboard.
What are the biggest threats to wildlife in Colombia?
The leading threats to threatened species in Colombia are annual & perennial non-timber crops, logging & wood harvesting, mining & quarrying, and livestock farming & ranching. Each threat is mapped to the species it affects in the country's threat breakdown.
How many threatened species are found only in Colombia?
Colombia has 1,212 threatened species that are endemic — found nowhere else on Earth. Because their entire global population depends on this one country, they are especially vulnerable to local habitat loss.
How many of Colombia's threatened species have declining populations?
1,290 of Colombia's threatened species have populations that are still declining. Reversing these trends is the central focus of the conservation work the country dashboard tracks.
How does Colombia compare to other countries for threatened species?
Colombia ranks #5 of 253 countries by number of threatened species, and accounts for roughly 4.20% of all threatened species tracked worldwide. Threat is geographically concentrated, so a high rank reflects both rich biodiversity and intense pressure on it.
Where does the data for Colombia come from, and can I download it?
SpeciesRadar draws on the IUCN Red List, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), the World Database on Protected Areas, and national red lists. Every table on the Colombia profile — species, national red list, and protected areas — can be downloaded as a CSV spreadsheet or a branded PDF report.
