Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
The Rufous Spinetail faces severe pressure from rapid deforestation and agricultural expansion throughout its restricted range in Colombia's Eastern Cordillera. Mining activities and infrastructure development have fragmented its specialized cloud forest habitat, while cattle ranching continues to convert remaining forest patches. Climate change poses an additional threat by shifting the altitudinal zones where this montane species can survive.
Habitat
The Rufous Spinetail inhabits humid montane forests and cloud forests in Colombia's Eastern Cordillera, typically found at elevations between 1,800-2,800 meters. It prefers dense understory vegetation with thick tangles of vines and bamboo thickets where it forages for insects and builds its distinctive stick nests.
