Overview
Pocillopora damicornis is a reef-building coral in the family Pocilloporidae, recognized by its branching, finger-like colonies and finely textured surface, from which its common name derives. It is a colonial organism composed of numerous small polyps that extract calcium carbonate from seawater to construct rigid skeletons, forming three-dimensional structures that provide shelter and habitat for fish, crustaceans, and other invertebrates. Like other scleractinian corals, it hosts symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) that supply the majority of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis, while the coral provides protection and access to sunlight in return.
This species occurs widely across tropical and subtropical waters, including the coasts of the United States, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, China, Vietnam, and Guam in the Indo-Pacific, as well as Pacific coastal areas of Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Colombia, and Ecuador. It inhabits shallow marine neritic zones and is also associated with mangrove-fringed coastal environments.
Its decline stems from a broad combination of pressures: coastal development and mining degrade reef habitat, while agricultural and urban runoff introduce pollutants and excess nutrients. Overfishing and destructive harvesting practices disturb reef structure, and invasive species and coral diseases add further stress. Climate-driven habitat shifts and ocean warming compound these impacts by increasing bleaching risk and disease susceptibility.
Conservation responses include marine protected areas, reef restoration projects, water quality regulations, and coral propagation programs in several range countries. Research into disease resistance and thermal tolerance is also ongoing.
Population trends remain downward, and the species is currently classified as Endangered, reflecting sustained cumulative pressure from multiple, largely unresolved anthropogenic threats.
