Overview

This carnivorous marsupial is one of the most recently described members of its genus, formally recognized as distinct in 2013. It is a small, mouse-like mammal with grey-brown fur, a dark tail with a black tip, and the characteristic sharp muzzle and pointed teeth of the dasyurids. Like other antechinus species, it exhibits a distinctive semelparous breeding strategy in which males undergo a synchronized, intense mating period followed by systemic collapse and death shortly afterward, while females may survive to breed a second season.

As an insectivore and opportunistic predator of small invertebrates, it plays a role in regulating arthropod populations within its forest habitat.

The species is restricted to a small area of high-elevation subtropical rainforest and adjoining wet sclerophyll forest and shrubland along the Queensland–New South Wales border in eastern Australia, particularly within the Gondwana Rainforests region. Its range is highly fragmented and limited in extent.

Its decline is driven by increasingly frequent and severe bushfires, including the 2019–2020 Australian megafires which burned through significant portions of its habitat, compounded by fire suppression practices that alter forest structure. Prolonged drought conditions have further stressed remaining habitat, while predation by introduced species such as feral cats adds additional pressure on already small, isolated populations.

Conservation efforts include post-fire habitat monitoring, predator control programs, and research into population genetics and distribution to guide land management. Protected area status within existing reserves offers some habitat security.
