Overview

Tridacna derasa is one of the largest bivalve species, capable of reaching shell lengths of over 50 centimetres, with a smooth, unfluted shell distinguishing it from other giant clam species. It hosts symbiotic photosynthetic algae (zooxanthellae) within its mantle tissue, which supply the majority of its nutritional needs and give the exposed mantle its characteristic mottled, colourful appearance. As a filter feeder and habitat structure, it contributes to reef ecosystem productivity and provides microhabitat for other marine organisms.

The species is found on coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific region, typically in shallow, clear marine neritic waters where sunlight can reach its photosynthetic symbionts. Its range includes waters off Australia and reef systems associated with China, among other Indo-Pacific locations.

Populations have declined sharply due to sustained harvesting for meat, the aquarium trade, and shell collection, with hunting and trapping pressures ongoing across much of its range. Habitat degradation from coastal development, sedimentation, and reef alteration further reduces suitable settlement areas for juveniles.
