Cyprinus ilishaestomus
Overview
Cyprinus ilishaestomus is a species of ray-finned fish in the genus Cyprinus. Critically endangered, it inhabits Qilu Lake, Yunnan, China.
Cyprinus ilishaestomus faces severe population decline primarily due to habitat degradation from agricultural runoff and urban development in its native river systems. Dam construction has fragmented its spawning grounds, while introduced species compete for resources and alter the aquatic ecosystem. Water pollution from industrial activities has further compromised water quality in the limited watersheds where this species persists.
Habitat
This freshwater cyprinid inhabits slow-moving rivers and associated wetlands in specific watershed systems. It requires clean, well-oxygenated waters with suitable spawning substrates and riparian vegetation cover.
