Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
The Star-chested Treerunner faces severe pressure from deforestation and habitat fragmentation across its Andean cloud forest range. Mining activities and agricultural expansion have eliminated significant portions of its specialized montane forest habitat, while climate change is causing upslope shifts in suitable temperature and humidity conditions. The species' restricted range and specific habitat requirements make it particularly vulnerable to these ongoing pressures.
Habitat
The Star-chested Treerunner inhabits humid montane cloud forests and elfin woodlands at elevations between 1,800-3,200 meters in the Andes. It prefers dense, moss-covered forests with abundant epiphytes where it forages along tree trunks and branches in the understory and mid-canopy levels.
