Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Loropetalum subcordatum faces severe pressure from rapid urbanization and agricultural expansion across its native range in southeastern China. The species' restricted distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to habitat fragmentation, as remaining populations become increasingly isolated in small forest patches. Overcollection for horticultural trade has further depleted wild populations, with the attractive flowering shrub being harvested unsustainably for ornamental purposes.
Habitat
This endemic shrub inhabits subtropical evergreen forests and forest margins in mountainous regions of southeastern China, typically growing on well-drained slopes at elevations between 200-800 meters. It thrives in partially shaded understory environments with rich, acidic soils and high humidity levels.
