Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Diploglossus montisserrati faces severe threats from volcanic activity on Montserrat, where pyroclastic flows and ash deposits have destroyed much of its forest habitat since the 1995 eruptions began. The species' extremely limited range makes it particularly vulnerable to habitat loss, while introduced predators such as cats and rats pose additional pressure on remaining populations. Climate change may further reduce suitable habitat in the island's remaining safe zones.
Habitat
This endemic lizard inhabits the montane forests and forest edges of Montserrat, typically found in leaf litter and under logs in humid woodland areas. The species is restricted to the island's higher elevations, particularly in the Centre Hills region which remains outside the volcanic exclusion zone.
