Montipora turgescens is a colonial stony coral in the family Acroporidae, typically forming encrusting to plate-like or knobby colonies with a texture of small, closely-set papillae or protrusions covering the surface. Like other scleractinian corals, its polyps host symbiotic zooxanthellae, which supply the colony with the bulk of its energy through photosynthesis while the coral itself extends calcium carbonate skeleton, contributing to reef framework building. As a reef-building species, it provides structural habitat and shelter for numerous other reef organisms, forming part of the foundation of tropical marine ecosystems.
