Montipora hoffmeisteri is a colonial stony coral in the family Acroporidae, forming encrusting to plate-like or laminar colonies with small, densely packed corallites. Coloration typically ranges through browns, creams, and yellows, and like other scleractinian corals, it relies on symbiotic zooxanthellae for the majority of its energy needs while extending polyps to capture plankton, particularly at night. As a reef-building species, it contributes calcium carbonate skeletal material to reef structure, providing habitat complexity that supports numerous other marine organisms.
