Margarya yangtsunghaiensis
Overview
Tchangmargarya yangtsunghaiensis is a species of large operculate freshwater snail, an aquatic gastropod mollusc in the family Viviparidae, the river snails.
Margarya yangtsunghaiensis faces severe threats from water pollution and eutrophication in Dianchi Lake, its only known habitat. Industrial discharge, agricultural runoff, and urban wastewater have dramatically degraded water quality, creating hypoxic conditions that are lethal to this endemic freshwater snail. The species has also suffered from habitat modification through lake engineering projects and the introduction of non-native fish species that compete for resources and alter the lake ecosystem.
Habitat
This endemic freshwater gastropod is restricted to Dianchi Lake in Yunnan Province, China, where it inhabits shallow littoral zones with muddy substrates. The species requires well-oxygenated waters with specific chemical conditions that have been severely compromised by decades of pollution.
