Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Ambystoma dumerilii faces severe threats from water extraction and pollution in its limited lake habitat within Mexico City's urban expansion. The species is critically endangered due to habitat degradation from agricultural runoff, urban development, and the introduction of non-native fish species that compete for resources and prey on larvae. Climate change and prolonged droughts have further reduced water levels in its already restricted range.
Habitat
This critically endangered salamander is endemic to the ancient lake system of Xochimilco in the Valley of Mexico, inhabiting shallow freshwater canals, wetlands, and remnant lake areas with abundant aquatic vegetation. The species requires cool, well-oxygenated water with muddy substrates and dense plant cover for shelter and breeding.
