Silurus mento

Unknown

Overview

The Kunming catfish is a critically endangered species of catfish in the family Siluridae. It is endemic to Dian Chi Lake, China. There have been no confirmed records in decades and it is feared extinct. S. mento grows to a length of 21.5 centimetres (8.5 in) TL.

Silurus mento faces severe population decline primarily due to extensive dam construction across its native river systems, which fragments populations and alters natural flow regimes essential for spawning. Overfishing and the use of destructive fishing methods have further reduced already small populations. Water pollution from agricultural runoff and industrial discharge degrades the clean, well-oxygenated waters this catfish requires for survival.

Habitat

This large catfish inhabits deep pools and slow-flowing sections of major river systems in Southeast Asia, preferring areas with rocky or sandy substrates. It requires clean, well-oxygenated waters and is typically found in the main channels of large rivers rather than tributaries or floodplains.
