Kentiopsis magnifica
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Kentiopsis magnifica faces severe pressure from habitat destruction as New Caledonia's unique maquis shrublands are cleared for mining operations and urban development. The species' extremely limited range makes it particularly vulnerable to localized disturbances, with entire subpopulations at risk from single development projects. Invasive plant species further degrade remaining habitat quality by outcompeting native vegetation communities.
Habitat
This endemic palm inhabits New Caledonia's distinctive maquis shrublands and low-elevation dry forests, typically growing on ultramafic soils derived from serpentine and peridotite substrates. It occurs in open woodland areas and forest margins where the specialized soil chemistry supports unique plant communities adapted to high levels of heavy metals.
