Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Hoffmann's pika faces severe habitat fragmentation due to agricultural expansion and livestock grazing in its montane grassland range. Climate change poses an additional threat as warming temperatures force this cold-adapted species to retreat to higher elevations with increasingly limited suitable habitat. Mining activities and infrastructure development further fragment the already restricted alpine meadow ecosystems this species depends upon.
Habitat
Hoffmann's pika inhabits alpine and subalpine meadows, rocky slopes, and grasslands at elevations between 3,000-4,500 meters in the mountains of central Asia. The species requires areas with adequate rock crevices for shelter and nearby herbaceous vegetation for foraging.
