Overview
Styxichthys gejiuensis, the Gejiu blind loach, is a species of stone loach endemic to China. It is a troglomorphic fish whose eyes have degenerated into shallow concave pits. It found in a subterranean river 400 m (1,300 ft) underground in Gejiu, Yunnan.
Triplophysa gejiuensis faces severe threats from mining activities and industrial development in the Gejiu region of Yunnan Province, China, which have contaminated its freshwater habitats with heavy metals and altered water chemistry. Urban expansion and agricultural runoff have further degraded water quality in the limited stream systems where this endemic loach occurs. The species' extremely restricted range makes it particularly vulnerable to localized environmental changes and pollution events.
Habitat
This endemic loach inhabits freshwater streams and small rivers in the Gejiu area of Yunnan Province, China. It occurs in clear, well-oxygenated waters with rocky or sandy substrates in mountainous terrain.
