Erythroxylum mogotense
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Erythroxylum mogotense faces severe threats from agricultural expansion and urban development within its extremely limited range in Cuba's mogote karst formations. The species' restriction to specific limestone outcrops makes it particularly vulnerable to habitat modification, as even small-scale disturbances can eliminate entire subpopulations. Mining activities and quarrying operations pose additional risks to the fragile karst ecosystem that supports this endemic shrub.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the mogote karst formations of western Cuba, specifically adapted to limestone outcrops and rocky crevices in tropical dry forests. It grows on steep limestone cliffs and in the specialized microhabitats created by the dissolution of carbonate rocks in the Sierra de los Órganos region.
