Acheilognathus elongatus
Overview
The elongate bitterling is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish in the family Acheilognathidae, the bitterlings. It is found only in shallow water areas along the shores of Lake Dianchi in China.
Acheilognathus elongatus faces severe population decline primarily due to habitat degradation and water pollution in its native river systems. Dam construction and water diversions have fragmented its freshwater habitats, while agricultural runoff and industrial pollution have deteriorated water quality. The species' specialized reproductive relationship with freshwater mussels makes it particularly vulnerable to ecosystem disruption, as both the fish and its host mollusks require pristine aquatic conditions.
Habitat
This freshwater fish inhabits clean, slow-flowing rivers and streams with sandy or muddy substrates in East Asia. It requires well-oxygenated waters with abundant freshwater mussel populations, which serve as essential hosts during its reproductive cycle.
