Overview

Dipsastraea favus is a stony coral that forms massive, dome-shaped or encrusting colonies composed of tightly packed polyps, each with a distinct corallite wall giving the surface a honeycomb-like texture. Like other scleractinian corals, it secretes a calcium carbonate skeleton and hosts symbiotic zooxanthellae, which supply the majority of its energy through photosynthesis while the polyps extend at night to capture zooplankton. As a reef-building species, it contributes to the structural framework of reef habitats, providing shelter and substrate for numerous invertebrates and fish.
