Cycas armstrongii is a palm-like cycad native to northern Australia, characterized by a stout, columnar trunk topped with a crown of stiff, pinnate leaves. Like other cycads, it is dioecious, with separate male and female plants producing cone-like reproductive structures; pollination is largely mediated by specialist insects rather than wind. The species grows slowly and can persist for many decades, contributing to the structure of the woodland understorey it inhabits and providing habitat and food resources, including seeds, for various native fauna.
The species is restricted to the Northern Territory of Australia, particularly the Darwin region, where it occupies rocky areas within savanna woodland habitats. Its distribution is closely tied to well-drained, often skeletal soils associated with sandstone or laterite outcrops.
