Critoniopsis bogotana
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Critoniopsis bogotana faces severe pressure from rapid urban expansion around Bogotá, which has fragmented and destroyed much of its native cloud forest habitat. Agricultural conversion for cattle ranching and crop cultivation continues to reduce available habitat, while climate change threatens to shift the altitudinal zones where this high-elevation species can survive. The species' restricted range makes it particularly vulnerable to localized habitat destruction and environmental changes.
Habitat
This species inhabits cloud forests and montane ecosystems in the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia, typically found at elevations between 2,500-3,200 meters. It grows in humid, cool environments with persistent fog cover, often in areas with rich, well-drained soils along forest edges and clearings.
