Overview

Libanothamnus parvulus is a critically endangered flowering plant endemic to Lebanon, belonging to the Asteraceae family. This small perennial herb is characterized by its compact growth form and distinctive yellow composite flowers. The species has an extremely restricted distribution, found only in specific mountainous regions of Lebanon where it grows in rocky limestone habitats at high elevations.

The plant's limited range makes it particularly vulnerable to environmental changes and human activities. Primary threats to L. parvulus include habitat destruction due to quarrying operations, urban development, and infrastructure expansion in Lebanon's mountainous areas.

Climate change poses additional risks through altered precipitation patterns and temperature regimes that may affect the species' specialized habitat requirements. Overgrazing by livestock has also contributed to habitat degradation in some areas where the species occurs. The plant's small population size and fragmented distribution increase its vulnerability to stochastic events and reduce genetic diversity.

Conservation efforts for L. parvulus have included habitat protection measures and botanical surveys to better understand its distribution and ecological requirements. Ex-situ conservation through seed banking and cultivation in botanical gardens has been implemented to preserve genetic material.

Research initiatives focus on understanding the species' reproductive biology and habitat needs to inform conservation strategies. Collaboration between Lebanese institutions and international conservation organizations has supported monitoring programs and habitat restoration efforts in key areas where the species persists.

Libanothamnus parvulus faces severe threats from habitat destruction caused by quarrying, urban development, and infrastructure projects in Lebanon's mountains. Climate change and overgrazing by livestock further degrade the specialized rocky limestone habitats where this endemic plant survives. The species' extremely limited distribution and small population size make it highly vulnerable to these ongoing pressures.

Threat summary

Habitat

Libanothamnus parvulus inhabits rocky limestone substrates in mountainous regions of Lebanon at high elevations. The species grows in specialized alpine and subalpine environments characterized by well-drained soils and Mediterranean mountain climate conditions.
