Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Burretiokentia koghiensis faces severe threats from mining activities and infrastructure development within its extremely restricted range on New Caledonia's ultramafic soils. The species' tiny population is further threatened by invasive plant species that alter the understory composition of its native forest habitat. Fire events, both natural and human-induced, pose additional risks to the remaining individuals in this highly localized endemic palm.
Habitat
This critically endangered palm is endemic to the ultramafic soils of New Caledonia, where it grows in specialized maquis shrubland and forest margins. The species is restricted to serpentine substrates that support unique plant communities adapted to high levels of heavy metals in the soil.
