Overview
The brown wood rail is a Vulnerable species of bird in the subfamily Rallinae of the rail, crake, and coot family Rallidae. It is found in Colombia and Ecuador.
The Brown Wood-Rail faces significant threats from habitat loss and fragmentation due to deforestation, agricultural expansion, and human settlement development throughout its range in South American wetlands and forest margins. Its specialized habitat requirements make it particularly vulnerable to environmental changes, while hunting pressure and wetland drainage further contribute to population declines.
Habitat
Inhabits dense tropical lowland forests, forest edges, and adjacent wetland areas including swamps, marshes, and riparian zones, typically below 1000m elevation. Prefers areas with thick understory vegetation near water sources and is often found in secondary growth forests and forest-wetland ecotones.
