Overview
Coenonympha orientalis is a small butterfly found in the Palearctic that belongs to the browns family. It is found in the Balkans.
The Balkan Heath faces significant threats from habitat loss and fragmentation due to agricultural intensification, urbanization, and changes in traditional land management practices across its limited range in southeastern Europe. Climate change poses additional risks by altering the montane grassland ecosystems this species depends on, while overgrazing and abandonment of traditional pastoral practices further degrade suitable habitat.
Habitat
Inhabits dry grasslands, scrublands, and open woodland clearings in mountainous regions of the Balkans, typically at elevations between 500-1500 meters. The species favors areas with sparse vegetation and rocky outcrops, often associated with traditional pastoral landscapes and semi-natural grasslands.
