Overview
Acropora samoensis is a reef-building stony coral in the family Acroporidae, forming branching colonies that create complex three-dimensional structures on reef flats and slopes. Like other Acropora species, it relies on symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) for nutrition and grows relatively quickly, contributing to rapid reef accretion. Its branching morphology provides shelter and habitat for fish and invertebrates, making it an important structural component of coral reef ecosystems.
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific region, with recorded populations in Timor-Leste, Australia, Mauritius, Brunei, China, and Japan. It inhabits shallow marine neritic waters, typically on reef flats and upper reef slopes exposed to light and moderate wave action.
Acropora samoensis faces a broad array of pressures. Fishing and harvesting activities, along with recreational use of reef areas, cause direct physical damage. Land-based pollution from domestic wastewater, agricultural runoff, and effluents from non-timber crop production degrades water quality, favoring algal overgrowth and reducing coral resilience.
