Overview
Acropora hyacinthus forms large, flattened table-like colonies composed of densely packed branching structures, a growth form that creates extensive structural habitat on reef surfaces. As a reef-building coral, it hosts symbiotic zooxanthellae algae within its tissues, which provide it with energy through photosynthesis while the coral's calcium carbonate skeleton contributes directly to reef architecture. These colonies provide shelter, feeding grounds, and nursery habitat for numerous fish and invertebrate species, making the species a key structural component of reef ecosystems.
This coral occurs across the Indo-Pacific region, with recorded populations in Australia, Vietnam, Taiwan, China, Japan, and Palau. It inhabits shallow marine neritic and coastal/supratidal zones, typically on reef flats and slopes where light penetration supports its photosynthetic symbionts.
The species faces a broad range of pressures. Coastal mining and quarrying degrade surrounding substrate, while fishing and harvesting activities and recreational use cause direct physical damage to colonies. Disease outbreaks, both from invasive species and native pathogens, affect coral tissue health.
Water quality is further compromised by domestic and urban wastewater discharge, agricultural runoff from non-timber crop production, and other pollution sources, all of which promote algal overgrowth and reduce coral resilience. Habitat shifting linked to broader environmental change compounds these stressors.
Conservation responses include marine protected area designations across parts of its range, coral reef monitoring programs, water quality management initiatives, and coral restoration projects involving fragment propagation and outplanting. Some regions have implemented fishing gear restrictions to reduce physical reef damage.
