Overview
Acropora florida is a stony coral that forms branching colonies, with individual polyps extending tentacles to capture plankton and deriving additional energy from photosynthetic zooxanthellae housed within their tissues. Its skeleton contributes structurally to reef frameworks, providing habitat complexity that supports fish and invertebrate communities. Like other Acropora species, it grows relatively quickly compared to massive coral forms, allowing it to colonize open reef substrate but also making it more vulnerable to physical damage and environmental stress.
This species occupies shallow marine neritic habitats across a broad Indo-Pacific range, including reef systems in Australia, Japan, Taiwan, China, Vietnam, India, Palau, and the Cook Islands.
The species faces a wide array of pressures. Coastal mining and quarrying degrade reef substrate, while fishing and harvesting activities cause direct damage to colonies. Recreational activities, including diving and boating, contribute to physical breakage.
Runoff from agricultural and urban sources introduces nutrients and pollutants that reduce water quality, while wastewater discharge compounds this stress. Disease outbreaks, exacerbated by native predators such as crown-of-thorns starfish, further weaken colonies. Habitat alteration linked to shifting environmental conditions adds cumulative pressure on already stressed populations.
Conservation responses include marine protected areas across parts of its range, reef restoration projects using coral fragments, water quality management programs targeting agricultural and urban runoff, and monitoring efforts tracking disease and bleaching events. Some regions have implemented restrictions on coral harvesting and destructive fishing practices.

Continued exposure to multiple concurrent threats, combined with the slow pace of reef recovery relative to disturbance frequency, suggests ongoing decline unless mitigation efforts are substantially scaled up.
