Overview
Acropora cytherea is a reef-building coral known for its distinctive plate-like or table-shaped colonies, formed by densely packed branches that fuse into flat, horizontal structures. These formations can extend over a meter in diameter, providing critical structural habitat and shelter for numerous reef fish and invertebrate species. Like other scleractinian corals, it relies on a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic zooxanthellae for nutrition, and it reproduces via mass spawning events synchronized with lunar cycles.
Its rapid growth rate makes it an important early colonizer in reef recovery following disturbance.
The species occupies shallow marine neritic habitats, typically on reef flats and upper reef slopes exposed to strong wave action. Its range spans the Indo-Pacific and beyond, with recorded populations in French Polynesia, Australia, Japan, India, Kenya, Mauritius, the Cook Islands, Palau, Timor-Leste, Brunei, China, Hong Kong SAR, and the United States.
The species faces a combination of pressures including destructive fishing and harvesting practices, physical damage from recreational activities such as diving and anchoring, and disease outbreaks linked to native and invasive species. Water quality degradation from urban wastewater, agricultural runoff, and unspecified pollution sources compounds these stresses, while storms, coastal habitat alteration, and land-use changes from agriculture and fire further reduce colony survival and recovery capacity.
Conservation responses include marine protected area designations across parts of its range, coral restoration and outplanting programs, water quality management initiatives, and international trade monitoring under CITES. Despite these efforts, population trends remain downward, driven largely by cumulative and often overlapping stressors rather than any single threat. Current assessments classify the species as Endangered, with continued decline expected absent substantial reductions in combined anthropogenic and climate-related pressures.
This coral faces pressure from human activities like fishing, tourism, and recreational use of reef areas, along with pollution from sewage, farm runoff, and other water contamination. It's also vulnerable to climate-related impacts such as storms and shifting ocean conditions, as well as competition from invasive species and diseases affecting the reef. All of these threats are currently ongoing, suggesting a stable but persistent level of risk rather than a clear increase or decrease.
