Overview

Acropora carduus is a stony coral in the family Acroporidae, recognized by its branching, corymbose growth form that creates complex structural habitat on reef surfaces. Like other Acropora species, it is a colonial organism composed of many small polyps that extend tentacles primarily at night to capture plankton, while relying heavily on photosynthetic symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) housed in their tissues for the bulk of their energy needs.
