Overview
Acropora austera is a stony coral belonging to the family Acroporidae, one of the most diverse and structurally important reef-building groups in the world's oceans. Colonies typically form corymbose or arborescent structures, with branches radiating from a central base to create a dense, table-like or bushy framework. Like other scleractinian corals, it relies on a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae (zooxanthellae) housed within its tissues, which supply the coral with energy while the coral provides shelter and access to sunlight.
This mutualism drives calcium carbonate skeleton deposition, allowing the species to contribute to the physical architecture of reef ecosystems that support fish, invertebrates, and other marine life.
The species occurs across the western Pacific and eastern Indian Ocean, with recorded populations in Australia, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, China, Japan, and Palau. It inhabits marine neritic and intertidal zones, generally in shallow, clear-water reef environments where light penetration supports its symbiotic algae.
The species faces a broad array of pressures, including destructive fishing and harvesting practices, recreational activities such as diving and anchoring, disease outbreaks, and competition or predation from problematic native species. Coastal development contributes wastewater and agricultural runoff that degrade water quality, while storms, flooding, and broader habitat alteration compound reef stress. These cumulative pressures have driven a decreasing population trend.
Conservation efforts include marine protected areas within parts of its range, reef monitoring programs, and regional water quality management initiatives. Despite these measures, the species remains classified as Endangered, and without substantial reduction in cumulative stressors, its population trajectory is expected to continue declining.
This coral faces damage from fishing and recreational activities like boating and diving, as well as pollution from sewage, farm runoff, and unidentified sources washing into its waters. It's also threatened by invasive species, disease, harmful changes to its habitat, and extreme weather events like storms and flooding, with additional pressure from nearby land clearing for crops and fire. Since all these threats are listed as ongoing with no signs of easing, the overall pressure on this species appears to be stable to intensifying rather than decreasing.
