Overview

This small freshwater fish, known as the Variegated Pygmy Perch, reaches only a few centimetres in length and displays the mottled colouration typical of its genus, ranging from olive-brown to reddish tones that provide camouflage among aquatic vegetation. It is a slow-moving, secretive species that shelters in dense submerged plants and woody debris, feeding on small invertebrates. As a small-bodied predator and prey item for larger fish and birds, it plays a modest but functional role in freshwater food webs, and its presence often indicates relatively intact, unmodified stream and wetland habitat.
