Tiny Flowered Paphiopedilum
Paphiopedilum micranthum
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Paphiopedilum micranthum faces severe pressure from illegal collection for the international orchid trade, with its distinctive small flowers making it highly sought after by collectors. Habitat destruction through limestone quarrying and agricultural expansion has fragmented its already limited range in southern China and northern Vietnam. The species' extremely slow growth rate and specialized pollination requirements make population recovery exceptionally difficult once disturbed.
Habitat
This terrestrial orchid inhabits limestone cliffs, rocky crevices, and moss-covered surfaces in montane forests between 300-1,200 meters elevation. It grows in areas with high humidity and filtered light, often in association with specific mycorrhizal fungi essential for its survival.
