Sorbus bakonyensis
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Sorbus bakonyensis faces severe population decline due to its extremely limited distribution in the Bakony Mountains of Hungary, where habitat degradation from forestry practices and invasive species encroachment threatens the remaining individuals. The species' narrow ecological requirements and small population size make it particularly vulnerable to stochastic events and genetic bottlenecks. Climate change poses an additional long-term threat by altering the montane forest conditions this endemic species depends upon.
Habitat
Sorbus bakonyensis is endemic to the deciduous and mixed montane forests of the Bakony Mountains in western Hungary. The species typically grows in rocky, calcareous soils on forest edges and clearings at elevations between 400-600 meters.
