Rusa timorensis is a medium-to-large deer species characterized by a robust build, with males bearing three-tined antlers and both sexes displaying coarse, grayish-brown to reddish-brown coats. Highly adaptable and gregarious, individuals typically form small herds and are active during both day and night depending on human disturbance levels. As grazers and browsers, they play a role in shaping vegetation structure and serve as a prey source for native and introduced predators within their range.

The species originates from Java and other Indonesian islands but has been widely introduced across the Indo-Pacific and beyond, with populations now established in Australia, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion, Malaysia, Thailand, Comoros, Brazil, and France. It occupies grassland habitats primarily, with some coastal populations utilizing marine neritic zones for forage and movement.

Population declines stem from multiple pressures: conversion of grassland habitat to annual and perennial crops, competition and habitat degradation from livestock ranching, unregulated hunting and trapping, and logging that fragments remaining forest-grassland mosaics.
