Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
The Rufous-crested Tanager faces severe pressure from ongoing deforestation and habitat fragmentation across its Andean cloud forest range. Mining activities and agricultural expansion, particularly cattle ranching, have eliminated significant portions of its specialized montane habitat. Climate change poses an additional threat by shifting temperature and precipitation patterns in the narrow elevational zones where this species occurs.
Habitat
This tanager inhabits humid montane cloud forests and forest edges at elevations between 1,500-3,000 meters in the Andes. It prefers dense, moss-covered forests with abundant epiphytes and shows particular association with areas where cloud cover provides consistent moisture.
