Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
The Golden-chested Tanager faces severe pressure from ongoing deforestation and habitat conversion throughout its restricted Andean range in Colombia and Ecuador. Mining activities and agricultural expansion, particularly cattle ranching and crop cultivation, continue to fragment the cloud forest ecosystems this species depends upon. Climate change poses an additional threat by shifting the altitudinal zones where suitable humid montane forests can persist, potentially forcing populations into increasingly smaller refugia.
Habitat
The Golden-chested Tanager inhabits humid montane cloud forests and forest edges at elevations between 1,200-2,400 meters in the Andes. It prefers dense, moss-laden forests with abundant epiphytes and typically forages in the forest canopy and subcanopy layers.
