Rana de cristal del Huila
Centrolene huilense
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Centrolene huilense faces severe pressure from agricultural expansion and cattle ranching throughout its limited range in the Colombian Andes. Deforestation for coffee cultivation and pastureland has fragmented the cloud forest streams essential for this glass frog's reproduction. The species' restriction to high-elevation watersheds makes it particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts, as warming temperatures force suitable habitat upslope into increasingly smaller areas.
Habitat
This glass frog inhabits pristine cloud forest streams and adjacent riparian vegetation at elevations between 1,800-2,400 meters in the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia. It requires clean, fast-flowing mountain streams with overhanging vegetation for breeding and egg deposition on leaves above water.
