Pristimantis veletis

Declining

Overview

A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.

Pristimantis veletis faces severe threats from rapid deforestation and agricultural expansion within its extremely limited range in the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia. The species' restriction to high-elevation cloud forests makes it particularly vulnerable to climate change, as warming temperatures force suitable habitat upslope with nowhere left to retreat. Mining activities and infrastructure development further fragment the remaining forest patches, while the species' direct development (no aquatic larval stage) limits its ability to recolonize disturbed areas.

Threat summary

Habitat

This species inhabits pristine cloud forests and montane rainforests at elevations between 2,000-2,800 meters in the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia. It requires dense canopy cover with high humidity levels and is typically found among leaf litter and low vegetation in undisturbed forest areas.
