Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
The Plate-billed Mountain-toucan faces severe pressure from rapid deforestation throughout its Andean cloud forest range, with habitat conversion for agriculture and cattle ranching fragmenting remaining populations. Mining activities and road construction further degrade critical breeding territories, while climate change is shifting suitable habitat zones upslope faster than forest regeneration can occur.
Habitat
This species inhabits humid montane cloud forests and forest edges between 1,200-2,400 meters elevation along the western slopes of the Andes. It requires mature forest canopy for nesting and foraging, particularly areas with abundant epiphytes and fruiting trees.
