Overview

Pycnoptilus floccosus is a small, plump ground-dwelling songbird with soft, fluffy rufous-brown plumage, a short tail often held cocked upward, and a distinctive loud, ringing song that carries through forest understorey. It forages primarily on the ground and in low vegetation, gleaning invertebrates from leaf litter, and is known for its habit of following larger animals, including lyrebirds, to catch disturbed prey—a foraging association that has earned it its common name.
