Pectinia lactuca is a colonial stony coral belonging to the family Merulinidae, recognized by its distinctive folded, leaf-like or crested plates that resemble lettuce leaves, giving colonies an undulating, ruffled appearance. Colonies form through the accumulation of calcium carbonate skeletons secreted by individual polyps, which extend tentacles primarily at night to capture zooplankton, supplementing energy obtained from photosynthetic symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) housed within their tissues. As a reef-building species, it contributes to the structural complexity of coral reefs, providing habitat and shelter for numerous other marine organisms.

This species inhabits marine neritic waters across a broad Indo-Pacific range, including American Samoa, Australia, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, China, and Japan, typically on reef slopes and lagoons where light penetration supports its symbiotic algae.
