Oecobius selvagensis
Overview
Oecobius selvagensis is a critically endangered spider species endemic to the Selvagens Islands, a small archipelago located between Madeira and the Canary Islands in the North Atlantic Ocean. This small cribellate spider belongs to the family Oecobiidae, commonly known as disc web spiders, which are characterized by their ability to construct distinctive flat, circular webs. The species was first described from specimens collected on these remote volcanic islands and represents one of the most geographically restricted spider species in the Macaronesian region.
The Selvagens Islands consist of only a few small islets with extremely limited terrestrial habitat, making any endemic species particularly vulnerable to extinction. The spider's population is confined to the sparse vegetation and rocky crevices of these islands, where it faces multiple threats to its survival. Habitat degradation from invasive plant species, particularly introduced grasses and shrubs, has altered the native ecosystem structure that the spider depends upon.
Climate change poses additional risks through altered precipitation patterns and increased storm intensity, which can directly impact the fragile island environment. The small population size and restricted range make the species highly susceptible to stochastic events and genetic bottlenecks. Conservation efforts for Oecobius selvagensis are limited due to the remote location and small size of its habitat, though the Selvagens Islands are designated as a nature reserve under Portuguese protection, providing some level of habitat preservation for this and other endemic species.
The primary threats to Oecobius selvagensis include habitat modification by invasive plant species that alter the native vegetation structure the spider requires for web construction and prey capture. Climate change and extreme weather events pose significant risks to the species' survival given its restriction to small, low-lying islands vulnerable to environmental fluctuations.
Habitat
Oecobius selvagensis inhabits the rocky coastal areas and sparse vegetation zones of the Selvagens Islands. The species is associated with native plant communities and rocky crevices where it constructs its characteristic disc-shaped webs.
